If you come up short
Maybe the grades aren’t there yet. Maybe you found all this out late. It is not over. There is a real, proven second road, and Coach Fite is living proof it works.
Junior college (JUCO)
A junior college lets you play, raise your grades, and qualify academically — then transfer up to a four-year school. You get two competitive seasons to make your case. It’s not a consolation prize; it’s a launch pad. JUCO has sent players to Division I and to the NFL.
Coach Fite
I didn’t qualify, so I went to Navarro. Junior college. Best thing that could’ve happened, looking back — I grew up, I got my work right, and I kept playing. From there it was Texas A&I, then the pros and a Grey Cup ring. The door you think is closed is usually just a different door. Walk through it on purpose.
The bottom line
Falling short of D1 eligibility out of high school is a detour, not a dead end. JUCO is a real path — Coach Fite’s actual path. Keep your grades alive and keep playing.
