Lesson 1 of 7
What “eligible” even means
Being good enough to play in college isn’t the same as being *allowed* to play in college. The NCAA has an academic gate every recruit has to pass through — and plenty of talented kids never make it through, not because they couldn’t, but because nobody told them the rules in time.
The NCAA Eligibility Center
It used to be called the “Clearinghouse.” Today it’s the NCAA Eligibility Center, and it’s the office that looks at your high school transcript and decides whether you’ve done the academic work to compete at a Division I or Division II school. No certification, no playing — it’s that simple.
The bottom line
Talent gets you recruited. Eligibility gets you on the field. You need both, and the second one is decided by work you start in 9th grade.
Coach Fite
In my day they called it the Clearinghouse and it might as well have been a locked door. Same door today, different name. The difference is — now you’ve got somebody handing you the key early.
