Lesson 4 of 4

Beating the clock (and the phone)

Student-athletes don’t have a time problem; they have a focus problem with a screen attached to it. Win the focus and the time appears.

  • Use the dead time — the bus, the wait before practice, study hall. Ten real minutes there is a chapter by Friday.
  • The phone is the opponent. Out of reach during blocks, no exceptions. It’s the easiest 30 minutes you’ll ever get back.
  • Knock out the worst assignment first while you’re sharpest. The day gets easier from there, not harder.
  • Plan Sunday: look at the week, see what’s due, and there are no all-nighter surprises.

The bottom line

You have more time than you think — it’s just hiding inside your phone and your dead minutes. Take it back, and grades stop being a crisis.
