Lesson 2 of 7

The levels: D1, D2, D3, NAIA, JUCO

There is no single “college football.” There are levels, and the smart move is to be honest about which ones fit you — and to keep doors open at several.

  • NCAA Division I — the biggest programs, scholarships, the most competition for spots (and now 105-man rosters, so spots are tighter).
  • NCAA Division II — strong football, partial scholarships common, real path to playing time.
  • NCAA Division III — no athletic scholarships, but academic money and a real college experience; great football still.
  • NAIA — smaller schools, scholarships available, often more accessible recruiting.
  • JUCO (junior college) — a launch pad to qualify academically and play your way up to a four-year school.

Real talk

Most college players are NOT at D1. Chasing only D1 and ignoring the other levels is how good players end up not playing anywhere. Cast a wide net.
