Lesson 6 of 7

The transfer portal (know the world you’re entering)

You’re not in the portal as a high schooler — but you’re being recruited INTO a world the portal reshaped, so understand it.

The transfer portal is college football’s free agency: a compliance database where a player who wants to leave his school enters his name, and other schools can recruit him. There’s now a single winter window each year (around early-to-mid January), with exceptions for playoff teams and coaching changes.

Why it matters to a recruit

Schools now fill needs with experienced transfers, not just freshmen. That means a high schooler has to be clearly worth developing. Your film, numbers, and upside have to pop — and a coaching change can shuffle your whole recruitment overnight.
